Des Collins - Longtime Supporter of Southern 100 Dies

2000 Blair Degerholm
Southern 100 Racing were saddened to learn of the passing of longtime supporter of the races on the Billown Course, particularly the Southern 100 Des Collins.
From the early seventies onwards, the ever astute Dessie had an eye for spotting up and coming talent in road racing and took many riders under his wing and honed them to racing success on the Isle of Man at Billown, Jurby, the Mountain Course and further afield.
Des Collins first racing success at the Southern 100 was achieved in 1984, Buddy Yeardsley taking victory in the 1300cc race.
The coveted Solo Championship was won on a Wilson & Collins Kawasaki in 2000 with New Zealand rider Blair Degerholm in the saddle.
Fellow Kiwi, Mike Moulai rode the familiar team green Kawasaki’s to victory in the Senior Support Race in 2014.
Des Collins will be greatly missed, nowhere more so than in the Billown Paddock, which has been made all the better by his presence.
Southern 100 Racing send their condolences to his wife Dot, his family and friends at this sad time.
